Pilgrim Hat Utensil Holder

By Michelle Melnik; Macaroni Kid Deerfield/Greenfield November 21, 2013
We made this pilgrim hat utensil holder using a paper cup, a piece of foam, streamers, and construction paper.  Since we were using this for plastic utensils, we did not use any glue and used only a small piece of double sided tape.

First we cut out the top of a black paper cup.  We then cut a rectangular piece of foam into a circle.  We folded the piece of foam, and cut a very small circle on the fold (it helps if the circle is a little bit smaller than the top of the cup), so that when we opened it, there would be a circle in the middle of the foam.  We then placed the top of the cup into the hole in the foam.  If you make your circle smaller than the size of the top of the cup, you can squeeze the cup so that it fits without using any glue.

We used blue streamers and yellow construction paper to finish off the pilgrim hat.  The streamer we put around the hat and tied it in the back, then used a piece of double sided tape to attach the buckle.

Since we did not want to use any glue, we did not cover the bottom of the paper cup.  We placed a napkin inside, which holds our utensils.  We then used a piece of double sided tape on the back of the napkin to hold it in place.

You could also use this as a place to keep small treasures, Thanksgiving treats, or crayons.
